KARUNA

About

Karuna is a Brisbane-based charity that has been established since 1992. The organisation strives to bring comfort, support, care and peace of mind to those who are dying, as well as their carers and families. Karuna provide free nursing, counselling, spiritual care, grief and loss support and equipment loans to over 500 people a year.

The Challenge

Health care and particularly pallaitive care places a very high adminstrative burden with regards to patient record keeping, mandatory reporting to Queensland Health and compliance to maintain QA accreditation. To date, Karuna has managed to meet these demands through the use of an extensive web of access databases and spreadsheets and the reliance on the generosity of a network of administrative volunteers.

These databases were not integrated and required a high level of data entry duplication and ineffeciency.

The Solution

CASYS is being introduced to consolidate the myriad of databases that currently exist and streamline processes which we expect will lead to improvements in efficiency and ultimately patient care.

The Results

CASYS introduced a number of benefits over the previous databases including:

  • Real time data collection and patient monitoring.
  • The listing of jobs in progress and associated statistics provides greater control and increased efficiencies with patient management.
  • Reduced travel, with infield allocation of Nursing and Counselling support replacing ‘return to base’.
  • Reduced hardware capital costs and maintenance.

The Future

Phase 2 of the CASYS development will involve rolling out the mobile application to Nursing, Counselling and Family Support Staff in the field through the use of Laptops, PDAs and web-enabled mobile phones. This will enable vital information about the patients care and wellbeing to be instantly made available to all relevant authorised personnel without compremising security and privacy concerns.

Phase 3 of the rollout will include the CASYS system to be further developed to incorporate eChart, a Federal Government initiative to make all patient chart information to be made available electronically.
